I always love it when people do something in an effort to better the world, whether it be awareness or a call to action, every voice counts. This weekend The Cannes Young Lions You Tube Film Competition took place. Basically it is an opportunity for young aspiring ad and film makers to showcase their talent and possibly be a part of one of the most prestigious advertising award shows in the world. They release a brief online and participants have 48 hours to produce a video 30 seconds to 1 minute long, upload it and get as many views as possible.
This year they focused on the UK based orgnisation, WaterAid. They describe themselves as “an international non governmental organisation. Our mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities.”
The brief according to WaterAid’s website was:
“Develop a short (max 1 minute) film to promote WaterAid’s summer campaign “Don’t let it drop” – putting pressure on world leaders to seriously address the global water and sanitation crisis. In particular, WaterAid asks you to draw attention to water and sanitation, the focus of our work (see below for more background information).
YouTube will fly both winners out to Cannes Lions (20-26 June) on an all-expense-paid trip, where they will both compete in the Young Lions Film Competition as Team Youtube.”
